HERITAGE Rhode Island Red (Rose Comb)
These are NOT the commercial red birds you get from the farm stores and hatcheries. These birds are a heritage breed, with much darker feathers, more meat and more consistency from generation to generation. Our birds are always bred with the APA Standard of Perfection in mind first. Rhode Island Reds are great foragers and do well both a free range, or coop setting, they lay 200-300 large brown eggs per year, generally starting at 4-6 months of age.
Males weigh approximately 8 lbs, and females 6 lbs, so they work well if you're looking for a breed that can lay a prolific amount of farm fresh eggs, as well as be put to use as a table bird. They are currently on "watch" status with the Livestock Conservancy.
Due to the cold winters in Indiana, we have chosen to raise the Rose Comb variety of Rhode Island Reds and thus far they have done supremely well in our climate. While we are breeding and selecting for rose combs, we can and do have some straight combs pop up from time to time. We have found our Rhode Island Reds to be nice, straightforward, friendly chickens that make a great addition to any small hobby farm, homestead, family flock or show string.
